6 Things to know before building a deck

Posted: November 25th, 2019

Spring has well and truly sprung and summer is just around the corner. If the arrival of warmer weather has you thinking about updating your outside space, building a deck can be an exciting project. Adding a deck can expand your living and entertaining spaces and when done well, a deck can increase the value of your home.

Deciding on the right style, materials and design is an essential first step in the planning process of a deck. Before you drive to the hardware store and load up on timber, here are a few key points to consider.

1. Climate

Firstly, consider the climate you live in. Is your area prone to frequent rain with dampness or high levels of humidity or do you live in a dry, arid region? Your answer will help determine what type of material you should be building a deck from. If you live in a wet area, a timber may not be your best choice. Timber when exposed to constant damp conditions, is prone to mildew and rotting and will reduce the lifespan of your deck. In this situation, it is best to consider alternative materials such as fibre cement. Often available in a timber-like finish, fibre cement is resistant to water and sun damage and termites.

2. Purpose

Consider your deck an outdoor extension of your home and furthermore, your lifestyle. Asking yourself why you want a deck can help determine the size and style of the deck. According to Houzz, one in two Australian homeowners use their outdoor space for entertaining, so if you are a frequent entertainer or have children, perhaps you’ll want a larger deck. However, if plan to use the deck solely for your morning cuppa, you might consider a smaller space.

3. Design

Knowing your intended purpose for the deck can also be key to deciding on its placement and orientation. If it’s for afternoon drinks, you’ll want to position the deck so it’s exposed to the afternoon sun. If you’ll be using the deck primarily in the morning, then build it on the side of the house that the sunrises.

Deciding on the style and design of your deck is the most important part of your project. You’ll want the deck to be an extension of your interior theme. Consider the prominent aesthetic features in your home and then translate these into colour choices, shapes and finishes like rails and stairs.

4. Permits

Plan, plan, plan. Being prepared is never a bad thing. Before you commence building a deck, ensure you have all the proper permits from your local council. Even if you have built a deck else, it’s best to double-check, as rules and regulations can change over time and between councils.

5. Plan ahead

Consider drafting a timeline for the construction of your deck. This can help particularly if there is an important date that you want to have the deck completed for. Take into account delays such as weather as well.

It’s a good idea to think longterm as well. Consider what you’ll be using the deck for in five or ten years time. Do you have any other projects looming that might impact your choice of design, style or material?

Remember if it’s a wooden deck you’ve chosen, you are signing up for a lifetime of timber staining on the weekends.

6. Budget

Even if it’s a ballpark figure, it’s always a good idea to set a budget before building a deck. Begin by getting a few quotes for the job and then increase the figure by ten per cent, so any surprises that come along don’t break the bank or the budget. Remember if your deck is a project you are undertaking yourself; measure twice and cut once.
