Home improvements that add value

Posted: December 24th, 2019

If you are thinking about selling your house in the near future. You are probably also thinking about some low-cost ways to boost the value of the property. Luckily, there are a few simple DIY renovations you can complete yourself that will help push up the final sale price without undertaking a complete revamp of the kitchen or bathroom to add value to your home.

Freshen up with a coat of paint

A few layers of paint can do wonders to brighten up a room or add more depth. Breaking out the brushes yourself is an inexpensive way to add value to the sale price of your home. In order to appeal to a wide range of potential buyers, it’s a good idea to stick to light and neutral colours. Don’t stop at the walls though, a lick of paint to older cabinetry will instantly brighten up kitchens and bathrooms too. Make sure you prepare properly by moving furniture and laying drop mats.

Change doorknobs and cupboard handles

Even the smallest change in details can rocket your home from the 1970s into the modern era. Consider switching up your cupboard and door handles, just make sure whatever you choose still matches the style of your home.

Update light fixtures

Adding different lighting features can help to elevate your interiors. Being consistent throughout the house will help to bring synergy to your home while choosing dominant light features for main rooms will give a sense of luxury.

Give your lawn some TLC

First impressions count when selling a home. How does yours look from the street? Whether it is a front yard or a backyard, giving your grass a bit of love can transform your yard into a lush green paradise by the time it comes to sell your property. Consider replacing any balding or patchy areas with new sod and make sure to tend to it carefully in the lead up to the sale.

Hang some mirrors

Have a small space or some empty walls? Hanging some mirrors will not only give the illusion of more space. They also lighten up a room and can replace hanging expensive art to fill a bare wall.

Spruce up your front door

Does your house stand out? Repainting your front door can change that. Consider going for a bright colour that’s still in line with the style of the rest of the house. Your entryway is the first thing a buyer will come face to face with so make sure it’s welcoming and friendly. Consider adding some potted plants to the area as well.

Deep clean and declutter

Finally, it’s no secret that a meticulously clean and well-organised house is preferred by potential buyers. If you are planning on moving then this step is of benefit to yourself as well as to add value to your home. Open up every cupboard and drawer and create keep, donate and throw piles. Then vigorously clean the space before replacing the items you intend to keep. This goes for surfaces and open storage such as shelving as well. With all the clutter from your life removed, this gives potential buyers the opportunity to imagine how they would use the space in the house rather than how you live in the house.
