Summer DIY hardware projects

Posted: December 18th, 2019

With the onset of the festive season hopefully comes a little bit of downtime away from work. With Christmas and New Years Eve occurring during summer in Australia, there isn’t a better time to get outside and get creative with some DIY hardware projects. Whether it’s your first time at the hardware store or you are an old hand at the tools, we’ve compiled a list of summer projects that will not only spruce up the backyard but keep yourself and any children you have entertained.

1. Rope Tyre Ottoman

Talk about recycling. This rope tyre ottoman is the perfect way to give a second life to a disused tyre and discarded bits of rope you have hanging around. Whether you are in need of an outdoor coffee table, another seating option or a footstool for kicking back in the afternoon, the DIY rope tyre is endlessly versatile and customisable. For full instructions have a look at this one from Better Homes and Gardens.

2. Color Concrete Block Planters

If you are a builder you’ll likely have a few (a lot) concrete blocks at your disposal. Bring a splash of colour your garden and freshen up the blocks with a coat of paint. Either paint the entire blocks or design unique patterns on them, using masking tape to guide where the paint should go. Arrange the blocks, fill with soil and plant your choice of flowers, herbs or even sun-loving succulents.

3. Hanging pallet garden

The humble wooden pallet is a DIYers dream. With so many potential uses, Summer DIY hardware projects are endless. For a unique yet rustic way to brighten up any outdoor space, convert an old pallet into a hanging wall garden. Only a quick trip to the hardware store is needed and you’ll have a thriving green space in no time. For a detailed step by step head to Design Sponge.

4. Outdoor Firepit

It may be the height of summer, but that shouldn’t stop you from looking forward to cooler days. If you have space in your yard, building a fire pit for the winter months is a great way to continue to get outdoors, even when the weather is cold. A firepit can come in all shapes and size, some being very elaborate and others being beautifully minimalistic. For a budget-friendly and creative way to recycle old whitegoods, check out this washing machine drum fire pit from Instructables.

5. Outdoor Pizza oven

Perfect for the cooler and warmer months, an outdoor pizza oven brings another layer of novelty to Friday night pizzas. A project like this one requires a little more planning to execute but can still be completed in a weekend none the less. Measure up your space and get designing.
